The Clanwilliam Fitness Festival Phenomenon.

This was by far one of my most interesting races in a long time. The big difference came in with me not tapering for this race and had a massive training block leading into the event that had me starting the event with sore legs. What followed was the interesting part.
With normal races I would normally exit the water a minute or so back to the first guys. With this race I only lost a couple of seconds to the first bunch that had us chasing all the way until the end. On the bike I could feel that I have been doing big sets within the week and didn’t have the power I would normally have on the bike, but I made the best of the undulating course with a strong wind that kept knocking againts us in all directions. At halfway through the bike we got some company in the form of former SA Iron man winner Raynard Tissink that had us pushing our gears even more to try and reel in the front two guys.
By the end of the cycle my legs were really hurting and I didn’t know how I was going to make the 5km off road run. I am by nature not a very strong off road runner. The transition from bike to run was quick and painless, until I hit the first peace of loose sand and then my run for the day was finished. I slowly started losing more and more time on the guys in front of me. It was a frustrating run knowing that I can normally run a lot faster and should have been a better placing for me in the overall, but you win some and you lose some. Well done to everyone that finished.
