TransKaroo Extreme MTB expedition - 240km

If it is the ultimate test you want, this one is for you! The race that takes the same 24 hour format as the more well-known Trans Baviaans 24 hour race (report on this a little later) departed from Eselsfontein Farm just outside Ceres and finished at the show grounds in Sutherland. We traversed the beautiful wide open Ceres and Tankwa Karoo. We all received race boxes that you can stock with whatever you would need in the form of either treats, nutrition, spares or a new sense of humor. These boxes are then transported for you to the various re-fueling station on the 240km route. Needless to say this is the ultimate endurance test in so far as cycling in my humble opinion. Rynhardt Tissink that won this inaugural event had ample respect for this race and told me at the end that this was his single longest time in any saddle.. ever! His winning time of just under TEN hours was, to put into perspective for you triathletes, an hour and more longer than his winning Ironman time..

The big test of the day was the massive climb we faced in the form of the evil mountain pass that takes you to the top of the Great Karoo escarpment called “Ouberg” My finishing time of 12:55:36 included a 20 min period on top of Ouberg where I had serious trouble to remember my name, let alone sit on top of a 29er! This is one event where you will come to truly appreciate your 32GI Nutrition and not to mention your Glider Sunnies!

I really rate this event just for the shear enormity of it along with the self-discovery one does in those big wide spaces. Oh ja and next year it’s the down run from Sutherland back to Ceres.
